Challenge

The MICHELIN Technology Centre brings together research, development, and process engineering capabilities at one facility. It is responsible for research and development while benefiting from a worldwide grid.

As a result of the strategic nature of the R&D centre, industrial technologies require a high level of service continuity and good sustainability of the facilities. Hence, it is necessary to have a comprehensive approach that takes into account different perspectives.

Thus, the facility must ensure the safety of employees, adopt environmentally friendly and compliant solutions in this respect, while maintaining operational efficiency and control of energy demand, along with access control and security systems related to the risks inherent in this aspect of the research activity.

Solution

Dalkia accepts the challenge and commits itself for a period of 10 years to ensure the continuity and quality of multi-technical services and the availability of energy, equipment, consumables, and document base. Among the company's tasks is to enable compliance with safety measures in order to verify the correct operating status, whilst providing full traceability to support MICHELIN in order to generate savings.

Dalkia proposes and implements the installation of a high temperature heat pump (CAP) on an air-cooling tower. The project includes installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.  The solution is part of the annual action progress plan under the energy efficiency contract.

Benefits

  • Production of renewable energy that is independent of fossil fuel energy fluctuations
  • Cost reduction of 14% in the first year due to substitution of energy sources
  • ROCE = 2.3 years; EEC = 70% of investment
  • Continued operation and maintenance of the air-cooling tower
  • CAP with new generation HFO-R1234ze refrigerant
  • Project can be replicated at other MICHELIN sites
