The challenge

Implement energy efficiency solutions to recover secondary energy from an industrial plant and reduce the negative environmental impact of district heat network operations.  ArcelorMittal is looking for a partner who is ready to take on the challenge and leverage additional financial resources needed to implement the energy transition.

Solution

Dalkia takes up the challenge - it starts with a project preparation and cost calculation.

The project requires the construction of special equipment for heat recovery. Technical engineering, including detailed studies to optimise secondary heat, is required to complete the task. The operation and maintenance of the secondary energy recovery unit also deserves special attention. Dalkia undertakes to purchase hot water from ArcelorMittal's secondary energy recovery unit, with a saving of 92,000 MWh, and to supply hot water to Dunkirk's district heat network (maximum temperature 109°C) throughout the year.  Dalkia takes on the challenge - it starts with design preparation and costing.

Benefits

  • Project successfully completed. Dalkia successively implements similar solutions also for other customers
  • The secondary energy recovered from the plant is discharged into the district heat network of the city of Dunkirk and covers 60% of the heat demand of the network
  • Significant improvement in the environmental impact of the Dunkirk district heat network - reduction of CO2 emissions by 19,000 t/year
  • Dalkia purchases secondary energy from ArcelorMittal and allows Dunkirk municipality to reduce price fluctuations relative to fossil fuel prices
